When she was a freshman in college, she secured a job in Dynamic cable in Coral Gables Florida as a Sports Director. Moreover, she worked there between 1984 and 1986 for a total of two years. Additionally, she was a part of the University of Miami water skiing team in this period. Plaza was a part of the Wilmington theater as a child, where she performed improv, performed in one-acts and directed them, as well as participating in various activities. She moved into New York City after high school where she studied television and film production at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts and took classes in Improv in The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. After graduating of high school, she relocated into New York City. There, she attended improv courses in the theatre of Upright Citizens Brigade. She also learned about film and television production at the Tisch School for the Arts. She graduated in 2006.
